So the State Department rolled over on this one? I suspect Senator Mary Landrieux may have brought pressure, along with Missouri Senator Roy Blunt and Congressman Sam Graves. Shameful that the US State Department is supporting kidnapping and human trafficking.

Were it the other way round, if it were a Guatemalan couple holding an American child, we would be sending in the Marines! I wonder if the Monahans used Congressional influence on the State Department to get this technicality of a ruling.

I did speak with a friend in Carthage, Mo about the Romero case and she believes that the court did give Encarnacion Romero's son back to her and voided the adoption by the Mosers.

In general, I have a problem with this case. I understand that every government is different but this makes me sad to know that the US had done nothing in regards to this case. When they applied for the passport, questions should have been raised and things should have been checked. I believe that the adoptive parents were just as wrong as the people who kidnapped the child being that they are supposed to be the parents and have the child's best interests at heart, nottheir selfish ones. They new better. They new it was wrong as soon as Sue said that LabCorp could lose the DNA test. At that point they should have contacted the government. I see this article was written last year but I realy hope that everything has worked out for the best. I am happy though that cases like this are now getting some spotlight. It happens in countries all over the world, including the US where children are kidnapped and sold/adopted out for a profit. Hopefully we can start getting it right.

I am sorry but that is just twisted. We have someone doing this in our town. Look if you're going to adopt, it's your decision but dont make your adopted children into a welfare system or a plan to request money from others to donate like its your pet project. Talk about the stigma for this poor child when they get older and go to school in the local town. You adopt then you choose to love them as much as if you had your own and maybe its just my pride speaking but I have two kids of my own by birth and I would NEVER think of asking money from people I know as any "fundraiser" scenario. Look if you can't afford your kids, adoption or by birth, DONT HAVE THEM!

I'm glad DCF is investigating this agency. I believe that they are operating under false pretenses, taking unnecessary risks, and slandering the name of Jesus Christ in their corrupt practices. They are in over their heads and suffer groupthink in an enmeshed dysfunction under Nidia Sicas lead.

Given that it is nearly impossible to adopt from El Salvador (we know, we've been in process to do just that for 3 1/2 years), I doubt that babies are getting through there with any kind of frequency. More likely, any "abandoned" babies there are getting warehoused in "orphan homes" or else given to wealthy upper-class Salvadorans who may then pass them off as their bio kids. I don't know about the other countries personally, though.

Absolutely believe people are finding ways around the Guatemalan shut-down. Ironically, in the Guatemala hey-day, moms FROM E.S., Honduras & wherever were coming to Guate to place their babies with American families.

Agreed - there IS a difference between the trauma which would occur if he were placed with another "stranger" family and the one that would occur if he were to be moved back to his original family. Of the latter, he can probably make sense that will carry him through the grief of the loss of his 2nd family. It would be great, however, if he could maintain contact with BOTH families - that's probably in HIS best interest, even if neither set of his parents really wants that for themselves.

We worked with ASC to bring home our daughter. ASC was wonderful to work with, very informative, helpful, always there to listen and guide us, was very up-front regarding all of our daughters issues. We had the most dealing with the Orlando office and became very fond of the office staff. You couldn't ask for a better agency.

The real tragedy here is that both the Southern Missouri Court of Appeals and the Missouri Supreme Court ruled that no adoption took place and ordered a new local hearing to determine if in fact an adoption could take place, yet Carlos was left in the custody of the Mosers, despite Mr. Moser having a criminal record. The courts could have mandated visitation and family counseling between the Mosers, Carlos and Encarnacion.

As a side note, my friend just won a seven year Missouri court battle to regain his son from an unlawful attempted adoption, and six months after reunion his son is a happy, well-adjusted 7 year old boy. The idea that moving from one set of loving parents back to an original family who also loves the child will cause harm is a false argument.

I read your book and found it devastating, unsurprising, and very well-written. As an international adoptee, I'm closely watching how the book is being received in the adoption community. I believe it's an important piece of work, and I would like to help publicize it in any way that i can. I would also like to know if the author will be doing any appearances in the New York City area. Sincerely, Kristin Pak

Erin,
It IS an incredible story and the courage it took for you to tell it is just as astonishing to me. The greed and corruption in our world never ceases to amaze and disgust me, particularly surrounding the welfare of children. The thematic ribbon of Christianity and faith woven throughout the adoption agencies associated with these atrocities is horrific and sickening, although not altogether shocking in light of contemporary scenarios linked to the Catholic religion. More and more often it seems to serve as a facade for inappropriate, abominable individual and collective behavior.
Plaudits for a story of distinction and truth that demands to be heard.

Did their parents want them back? How did they get to the orphanage? ....... I hope their parents did take them back joyously, and got financial help if needed so they could take care and keep their children. Adoption should be the absolute last option for any child. If a child is adopted, they should have an open adoption with visitations, and updates.
